Specific Purposes

Using English for Specific Purposes

The environment in which you will speak, read, write and listen to English is central to the vocabulary and phrases you will find most useful to use and to understand.

As a student who wants to use English in all areas of life, whether at work, with friends and with English speakers in the community on a day to day basis, you will want to learn everyday English and perhaps, at a later stage, English for more specific purposes.

Teachers also need to think about specific English that needs to be taught for students in different circumstances. English learners might be working people, retired people or full time students, they want to use English only socially or they may need to apply for jobs in an English speaking country.

Business English

If you will need to use English at work and in business, then this vocabulary and lists of phrases and idiomatic expressions will be useful for your own use and for understanding others.

Academic English

If you are a student or a teacher new to the English academic writing system, you will need to learn about appropriate academic English and the structuring of academic essays for UK study.

Letter Writing

Letter writing is a skill all of its own. The phrases you will need to use will depend on if you are writing a formal letter to a stranger or for business purposes or an informal letter to a friend. All aspects are discussed and examples given.
